OTDR

OTDR stands for optical time domain reflectometer is a optoelectronic instrument which used to measure the optical fiber and also equivalent of an electronic  time domain reflectometer . OTDR injects the optical pulses into fiber under some test.  The quality of OTDR is based on the measurement speed and range, accuracy ( correctness) and ability to perform and resolve. The common types of OTDR are: Full feature OTDR, Hand Held OTDR and RTU. Full feature OTDR is traditional optical time domain reflectometers which are usually larger and rich feature and less portable compare to Hand held OTDR. Full feature OTDR has a main frame which can fitted with a  multi function plug in. Hand held OTDR is designed mainly to fiber networks in a field environment using battery power and used to measure fiber links and locate fiber breaks. RTU is testing  module of RFTS ( Remote fiber testing systems).
OTDRs  also used for maintaining fiber performance. OTDR maps  cabling and can illustrate termination quality and location of faults that  hinder the network performance.
OTDR is a device which measure distance to reflection surface with measuring the time it takes for a light pulse to reflect from surface that include the ends of cable and breaks in the fiber.
EXFO OTDR:
OTDR  EXFO Maxtester 700B series is a first introduced tablet OTDR line which is light weight, handy and Comfort for the outside environment . It is designed with a 7 Inch, enhanced touch screen and offers a  icon based functions and instant boot up function , improve the real time modes. 700B series is a line of high performance OTDR from the leading manufacturer and also delivers a OTDR quality along with the best performance. It produce a amazing 12 hours battery power.
EXFO OTDR Maxtester 715B series is a optimized for point to point testing and ideal for short fiber testing. It is short access and troubleshooting.
OTDR EXFO MaxTester 720B  features a dynamic range of 36 dB and dead zones and offer a efficient testing of closely spaced  such a patch panels in Cos and it is optimized for point to point testing to any network. OTDR EXFO 730B series is a full featured , entry level with  tablet inspired design, for end to end FTTH characterization and useful for metro . It make a test through a optical splitters.
VIAVI OTDR:
OTDR VIAVI smart series is an robust wireless connectivity options which increase  the productivity and easy to use device for any level techs. It is designed by integrates all the fiber requirement test into a device with OTDR measurements. It is feature are single, dual, tri wavelength version and automated fiber inspection with a integrated CW light source on OTDR and also large 5 inch touch screen display. The VIAVI OTDR  ensures fast and easy measurement and manage data from anywhere in network and optimizes field operations.
Deviser OTDR is a 4th generation of OTDR offers a new technology and performance . Its a real time analysis and modular platform and a optical instrument to verify access networks , construction and authentication of FFTH networks etc. It provide a excellent dynamic range  from 28-39dB.
Need of an OTDR:
OTDR  is mainly used to locate a break or problem in cable run and take a snapshot of fibers before installation to a customer. OTDRS are not especially accurate for testing loss that can be used to conduct outdoor runs of single mode fiber and OTDR also helpful for preventive maintenance such as checkups on facility fiber.
OTDR Specifications:
Dynamic range
Dead zone
Resolution
Distance accuracy
Level accuracy and linearity
OTDR operating :
To operate a OTDR we have check the following  things:  Fiber type either single mode or multimode. Wavelength for single mode range is set to  1310nm or 1550nm and for multi mode is set to 850nm or 1300nm. parameters is main for distance range, resolution. Index of refraction and display Units are labeled in feet or meters. Dead zone jumper is mainly used connect the fiber as a sufficiently long,  from OTDR and fiber under test  because sometimes it takes to  connect  far end of cable.
